Questions about "COUPONING"

Okay, I am totally a hater on this subject. I admit it. I find couponing to be a silly waste of time because whenever I see it, it's always products that we don't use-- so I fail to find the redemtion in puting all that work into getting things my kids won't eat.

But I consider you all to be an intelligent group of women-- has anyone tried it? What do you guys think? Be brutally honest. Am I just missing something?

And I was thinking this morning-- what if we used the power of couponing for charity? Would that work?

Google "valpak savings community." I don't get the paper and so I don't cut out coupons-but maybe I should get the paper...if I did, what paper should I get? Anyway, valpak will mail you that blue envelope with savings in your community. Brandon and I use their retaurant coupons and find that it's a good way to try out new ma and pops restaurants, who are usually the ones in the coupon book. Then, I have a Fred Meyer and Haggens reward card, but I have found that the Fred Meyer rewards are better, but they add up for me only the winter months because during the summer, Haggens has so much amazing produce. I also like Haggens seafood and meat much better. The only meat I buy at Fred Meyer is chicken, which I usually don't because I get it at Costco. And even for whole chickens, I get those at Haggens. Haggens doesn't have to always mean more expensive if you just stay on the "outside" of the ailes and shop only fresh grocery items.

Oh I totally missed the point I wanted to make: google "valpak savings community." The page will direct you to charitable projects through valpak and also how to get valpak mailed to your house, which I recommend.

I get ValPak, but I'm talking about those mega couponers-- the ladies who get $200 of groceries for like $3 (there's a link in my post). I don't know, it sounds so time consuming!

Oh. Yeah, I'm with you...not enough time for all that. Plus, what a snoozer of a way to spend time! I'd rather not have the extra money.

I haven't been able to make the coupon thing work for me because it is too time consuming. One of my friends gets five Sunday newspapers and cuts all the coupons then looks at all the ads and coordinates which coupons with which sales at which stores, and she gets some amazing deals, but she spends a LOT of time doing it. I do feel bad when there is a lady in front of me who gets a cart full of groceries for a few dollars, but she had to spend a lot of her time to get there and then she probably stands there for five more minutes reading her receipt to see if she got all the deals she was supposed to. If there are obvious coupons in the grocery store ads or Valpak restaurant ads I take advantage of those, but I've found just reading the ads and buying in bulk when things are on sale saves me money and doesn't take as much time.

I always used to have my kids cut them out of the Sunday paper but very seldom used them. But I think it was a good activity for the kids.

It is a good activity for the kids - even babies! When we get the junk mail with the local grocery stores weekly ads & the red plum insert with coupons I let Andrew tear it to pieces! He loves it! If I see a coupon for something we use I clip it and then quickly scan the ads to see if it's on sale. I probably only save a few dollars here & there, but it makes me feel good.

Ha! I knew it. My mom used to have us cut out the coupons saying how useful we were being...but she'd never used them! I wised up and realized she just wanted us to do that to stay out of her hair! Gotcha, Mom!

We rarely use coupons because they are typically for boxed/processed foods that we try to avoid. But yes, there is a ton of money to be saved if you shop based on sales.
